the setup…
Eloise Ambrose goes alone to a doctor’s appointment at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and never returned home. Her infant daughter Molly was only two months old and was raised by her father Adam and stepmother Evie. Fast forward to present day and Molly is married to Jesse Fitzgerald, a police polygraph expert, and leads the Rhode Island Department for Emergency Preparedness. Life is pretty wonderful for them until a major life event puts something in motion that upends all that Molly believed was true in her life.
the heart of the story…
FYI, Jesse appears in My Sister’s Keeper and I’d recommend reading that before this one if you already had plans to do so because of spoilers. Molly is at the center of this story and was self assured and comfortable in her skin until it all came crashing down. I’m being deliberately vague as I went in blind and it made a difference. How she navigates the rubble felt authentic and realistic. I felt what she did and my emotions ran a similar gamut. It’s a dual timeline that adds so many layers to a complex story.
the narration…
Rebecca Soler (Molly), MacLeod Andrews (Jesse) and Julia Whelan (Eloise) were outstanding in giving voice to their characters and in the storytelling. They delivered great performances.
the bottom line…
As with all of her stories, Picoult does the research and it is reflected here, tackling controversial topics and adding so many dimensions to complicated issues. And, she doesn’t hold back in the context of current events. There were a couple of twists that surprised me and I learned even more about the impact of 9/11 on families and beyond. Of course, I went back and forth in my opinions about the issues, as one should when considering all sides. Love when that happens and this story.
