Detective Skye Truman is at the site of the latest victim of a serial rapist and killer. The Salem Police Department investigator has a potential suspect who suddenly appears at the crime scene. Trent Calderon is a lawyer in the governor’s office who has used his engaging personality and wit to fool those close to him, including some of the most influential and powerful in the city. the heart of the story…
We get both characters’ points of view and that made this so chilling. Knowing both Skye and Trent’s moves and objectives kept me glued to the story. The Oregon trails made it even more atmospheric. I really didn’t know who’d win this “game.”
the narration…
Was there anyone more perfect to tell this story other than Hillary Huber? She’s one of my most favorite performers and I was in listening heaven.
the bottom line…
I’ve read almost everything Brennan has written and love her foray into short stories. She had me at the first page and I was instantly drawn into the investigation. I loved everything about the story, including being blindsided by the very subtle twist. I wouldn’t mind seeing this developed into a series.
