the setup…
Evelyn (Evie) Hudson awakens in a hospital, thinking she’s emerged from a drunken night of partying. She soon learns that she’s survived a terrible car crash but her “husband” Oliver did not. Evie has no idea what the nurses are talking about because in her mind she’s sixteen years old and has no memory of anything beyond that moment in time. As she struggles to come to terms with the loss of thirteen years of her life in the midst of people she doesn’t know, Evie finds a moment to escape and serendipitously ends up in the car of photojournalist Drew Kennedy…a man who is intricately connected to her past and present.
the heart of the story…
Imagine waking to see your future laid out in front of you in the present. Drew reluctantly agrees to help Evie slowly reconstruct the years since that party she attended with her best friend Bree when she was sixteen years old. No one from that time seems to be part of her life now and she’s deeply troubled by the choices she obviously made, bearing no resemblance to the vibrant young girl she is who has (had) a much different life path in mind. The story is a patchwork of transitions from moments in the present and past, brilliantly and intricately connected.
the narration…
Kristy Best and Nic English delivered exceptional performances, she as Evie and he as Drew. They made me believe in their characters and were excellent storytellers.
the bottom line…
Dual timelines can be tricky but in the hands of this skilled writer was a work of art. It’s not linear in presentation but the right scenes appeared at the most opportune moments. I loved everything about it and liked that I was learning about Evie’s past at the same time she did, experiencing the same emotional highs, lows and shocks. It’s a slow and gradual reveal but expertly timed. After this and her debut novel, I’ll read anything Emma Grey chooses to write.

Another wonderful review, Jo. This sounds very different from other books I’ve read where memory loss is involved.
