the setup…
It’s been a year since Caleb Colburn returned home to Star Falls to help his two siblings with the family business, Colburn Restorations, and their disabled father. He’s a retired former hockey player but the high end construction company is where his heart lays. Caleb’s the project manager over their most prestigious restoration to date so when Emma Sumner, the new architect liaison from Henderson Architects, shows up, both brace for trouble. He was her nemesis in college and she never gave him a break. But they’re both committed to making it work…and struggling with hidden attractions and baggage from past relationships. Now they are in free fall as they let go and take a chance on romance.
the heart of the story…
There’s so much to love here, including two adorable boxers named Calvin & Klein and Caleb’s precocious twin niece and nephew. His and Emma’s witty banter make their interactions so much fun and the barbs weren’t hurtful, just a lot of oneupmanship that’s clever. Emma has had a tough life and is keeping her dire straits from everyone, including Caleb. But I admired her independence and need to find her own way. Both are operating without a net and part of the allure is seeing them try to find their way.
the narration…
Lila Winters & Sebastian York captured their characters wonderfully and pulled off all that charming banter. Their pacing was pitch perfect and I’m glad I held out for the audiobook.
the bottom line…
One of the things I love about a Shalvis romance is her signature style of creating characters you really like, even when they get messy. And, she roots them in strong family bonds and community. I adore the relationship between the brothers. There were only tiny moments of miscommunication that resolved themselves quickly and Caleb was the one holding on tight when Emma was ready to bolt. Those bonus epilogues? Perfect!
