The Night We Met by Abby Jimenez @authorabbyjimenez @teresapalmer @webberesque @hachetteaudio @hachetteaudio.bsky.social #SayYoullRememberMe #TheNightWeMet

the setup…
Chris is a pharmacist who met Larissa two months ago when she needed a ride home from a concert. He was with his best friend Mike and she chose him. Now he’s come to her rescue when Mike had to bail on his promise to drive her and her mother to the hospital. Chris and Larissa spent a whole day together, becoming not only great friends but co-parenting a mangy Yorkie they rescued that day. But Chris has fallen…hard, though content to stand on the sidelines and be the real boyfriend behind the scenes, doing the things Mike should be doing for her but can’t because he’s got some very serious issues.

the heart of the story…
Ask me what my least favorite trope is and I’ll scream love triangles before you finish the question. I took a leap of faith with this author because of her skill in managing difficult and messy relationships. I adored Chris and Larissa’s friendship and that crazy Yorkie they named Wooferine. Larissa, a waitress with a ton of side hustles, was clueless about Mike’s issues until she wasn’t. Just as important was Chris’s tribe, one he’d been a part of for most of his life, his ride-or-die friends. Their relationship morphing to something else was a treacherous, no-win situation.

the narration…
This is a duet narration style (love it) and Teresa Palmer & Zachary Webber nailed their characters, sliding into them effortlessly. They delivered a great performance.

the bottom line…
Jimenez earned my trust, deftly tackling some very serious issues like alcoholism, depression and parental abandonment. Mike was no villain here so this romantic triangle was never easy. I was conflicted throughout and appreciated how authentically all was handled. I like my romances with more meat and depth, just like real life. No simple solutions here.
