the setup…
It’s been a year since Claire Karadec’s world fell apart. She’s forty-six years old and her marriage disintegrated in public as she learned of her husband’s affair at a charitable event and moments later caught him in the act! Humiliated, alone and rudderless, Claire finally decides to take a big step forward in her attempt to figure out who she is and wants to be…she moves from Colorado to Chicago. There she hopes to find a job, make new friends and create a life for herself.
the heart of the story…
Claire represents every woman of a certain age who finds herself suddenly adrift following a failed marriage. I admired her for facing her fears and leaning into them. She’d reached her rock bottom and just went for something. With her grown daughter Minnie cheerleading from Oxford, Claire found a community, dipped her toes into online dating (hilarious) and slowly regained her confidence and self awareness…and romance.
the narration…
I’m a Patti Murin fan and she tipped the scales in my deciding to listen to the story. She was perfection as Claire and outstanding in her storytelling.
the bottom line…
Claire’s journey wasn’t without pitfalls along the way but her moxie and determination kept her grounded and moving forward, finding her passion as a baker. It didn’t hurt that her newly found friends and community were a far cry from the plastic world she left. This story has everything…heartache, romance, hilarity and triumph. It was inspiring and I loved everything.
