Christmas is a few days away and a massive snowstorm is descending on New England. Mabel Miller is preparing to spend another holiday alone with her four cats in her isolated Vermont home. Izzy and her colleague Jason are finishing the staging of a client’s home for sale and are trying to head back home to Boston before the storm sidelines them. Brooke and her husband Matt are battling the storm as they try to get to her parents’ home in time for Christmas. Their two young daughters, nine-year old Elsie and four-year old Poppy are also in the car and Brooke is questioning her decision to not stay at the airport hotel after their arrival from London and ride out the storm of the century. Little did all of them know that their futures would all collide together very soon.
the heart of the story…
Yes, you guessed it. Matt and Brooke skid off the now invisible road and crash into the wall surrounding Mable’s cottage. Izzy and Jason are not far behind them and skid into their car. All end up finding respite at Mabel’s, who was not prepared to be sharing the holiday with anyone…by choice. All three women have personal issues they’re grappling with, especially Mabel who has a pretty big secret. But with two children in the midst, it’s hard to not be swept up in the magic of the season, which they’ll ne spending together.
the narration…
Dara Rosenberg, a frequent narrator of Morgan’s stories, was masterful in providing voice distinctions that were so believable for every character. It was as if she was caught up in the story and brought that magic to life.
the bottom line…
I look forward to Morgan’s annual holiday stories and never bothered to read the description. But this one was even more special with so many layers and even a book element! The cozy setting, seasonal atmosphere and camaraderie of the women serendipitously brought together made this a wonderful listening experience I didn’t want to end.
