Megs Hall and Mitch Ahearn are climbing legends living in Scarlet Falls, Colorado. No longer climbing professionally, the two founded the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team, world class in their skill and responsible for saving countless lives. They’ve been together for 48 years, since she was 16-years old, and their devotion to each other is extraordinary and obvious to everyone that knows them. When Megs and Mitch go off on a well earned vacation, which of course includes climbing, a freak accident severely injures Mitch and now they are depending on the team to save his life.
From the very beginning of this series, Megs and Mitch have been the foundation of the Team but always in the background. I never knew their history but was always aware of the deep respect and awe everyone in the town had for them. When I saw they were the focus of this story, I worried that their story might not be as compelling as those preceding it but after just a few pages in, I couldn’t put this down.
What made this story so outstanding wasn’t just Megs and Mitch’s history but how it was told. Mitch suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for quite some time. His neurologist was of the opinion that victims can hear what’s going on around them and encouraged Megs to talk to him. She had the brilliant idea to get his journals that he’d meticulously maintained since they’d first met and read them to him, recording them in the process so he could listen to her when she was away or asleep. Here is where we learn the depth of not only their professional background but the deep love and respect they have for each other. Her voice lifted this man out of the abyss and was largely responsible for any chance of recovery. This was the most beautiful love story and an important history lesson of the origins of the climbing legends and community. It’s a work of art.

I don’t know that the cover really does the story justice. It sounds like such a poignant love story not really a no-shirt tale. Excellent review!
